With the the senior GB men's team playing their final two world cup qualifiers this week, it was the turn of the WBBL to take centre stage and with 5 games featuring current members of the GB Squad, GB had 9 players getting game time in the WBBL this weekend.
THIS WEEKENDS MVP; Georgia Gayle: 19pts/7reb/9ast
SEVENOAKS SUNS:
First up for the current GB Roster on Saturday was Janice Monakana, who featured in the Suns' 86, 62 win over Manchester Met Mystics. Monakana finished the game with 14pts, which was enough to see her finish as the 3rd highest Suns' points scorer and 4th overall in the game. Monakana also finished with a respectable 4 rebounds and 3 assists, the 4th highest total in the contest and all in 25 minutes of game time. Monakana is currently averaging 87.9% from her trips to the free throw line, and she carried on this trend by making both of her trips to the free throw line in this game, along with being 2 from 5 in 3pts attempts. Next up for Monakana and the Suns is a trip to The Riders, who also have members of the Team GB roster in their ranks.
LEICESTER RIDERS
This was the first game of the weekend for a WBBL club boasting multiple members of the GB Squad, and good news for GB because both Hannah Robb and Kirsty Brown both featured heavily in the Riders 31 points win over Cardiff Met Archers in the Welsh capital. Hannah Robb finished the game as the second highest points scorer on 20pts in 32 minutes of court time, she was only bettered by Riders team mate Ashley Arlen. Robb also recorded a block one of only 4 players in the game to do so, which will please GB coaches when it comes to the defensive end of the court heading into this summer's Euros. Kirsty Brown also saw a large amount of game time in this match, spending 24 minutes on the court recording 2pts, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. Next up, the GB pair make the trip to face Oaklands Wolves on Wednesday evening.
B. BRAUN SHEFFIELD HATTERS:
The third of Saturday's games saw the Hatters record a convincing 83-60 win over Oaklands Wolves. Georgia Gayle carried on from where she has left off for the Hatters and recorded the highest amount of game time for either side spending 31.59 minutes on the court during this game. In that time, Gayle packed in a massive stats haul finishing with 19pts, 9 assists and 7 rebounds, which resulted in Gayle leading the game in points and assists, and was top 5 for rebounds. Not content with that, she also went 100% from the free throw line, sinking all 8 attempts and ended with 50% on 3 pointers scoring 3 of her 6 attempts, an utterly staggering stats sheet, and unsurprisingly Gayle was named MVP for this contest and MVP for the current GB Players in the WBBL . Next up, Gayle and the Hatters welcome Cardiff Met Archers with Gayle looking to rack up another huge points tally.
LONDON LIONS:
After last weekend's loss to the Gladiators, whoever played the Lions next was probably in for a long afternoon and that's exactly what transpired at the copper box, as the Lions routed the Cardiff Met Archers 133 to 75, with all 5 of the Lions' GB players playing their part in the blowout win. Holly Winterburn ran riot with 24pts and 8 assists, all in 18 minutes of game time. In fact, GB had a host of players in the top 5 either in this game or for the Lions. Shequila Joseph recorded the highest number of rebounds in the game with 8, and recorded one block. She also recorded 8pts to round off a great 21 minutes of play. Elsewhere on the Lions roster, Shanice Beckford-Norton recorded 7pts, 1 assist and had 2 rebounds in 21 minutes of play and finished as the 5th highest scorer for the Lions. Chantel Charles and Azania Stewart also made appearances in the Lions rotation, notching up 2 and 7pts respectively.
CALEDONIA GLADIATORS:
After last weekends win over the Lions, the Gladiators would have been full of confidence and they continued their fine form with a 59-56 win over Durham in Glasgow. Chantelle Handy played 27.14 minutes of this game and notched up 3pts, 4 assists and 6 rebounds, landing her the most rebound for a Glads player in the game, and only bettered by Durham's Hendershot with 7. The 3pts that Handy recorded in this one came from outside the arch. Next up for the Gladiators and Handy is a trip to Newcastle to face the Eagles.
